Its nice to find a group of people that shared the same experiences as myself. I was in Ish bringing out families during the week ending 19 Oct 1951 and remember the runs up the canal as we had radio links (10 sets) that were in isolated positions, never knowing what was waiting on those exposed roads. It's hard to believe that was 50 years ago, it seems like yesterday. |

Served in
the Canal Zone from August 1953 to 1955. MT Mech. at Station
M.T then to 51.MT Coy. Seconded to El.Firdan and Fanara.
When evacuation took place I was transferred to the SMT Amman in Jordan. Finished my TOD in April 1956. After disembarcation leave spent the remainder of my 5 years at RAF. Honington in Suffolk. Happy memories of listening to Jazz on Canal Zone Radio with a Corporal in our tent at El Hamra. He was from Chester-le-Street. Co Durham and I can't remember his name. Hard times at El Hamra but makes one apprecate the better aspects of life. Migrated to Australia in 1970 and now retired and in my 70s. Oz.is a great place to live but will never forget grass roots! |

I
served at RAF Fayid from October 1951
to October 1953. I was an airframe mechanic on first line servicing on Vickers Valetta C MK 1's.
Spare time - I rode in time trials, did a bit of Aero modelling, and helped run the ‘Ballet & Opera Music Circle’ in the YMCA. I am now retired of course, but would like to hear from any of the ‘old boys’ of 204 & 84, also any one from 216 Sqdn who shared billet 62 at Fayid. I am a member of the SVA, and took part in the 2003 Remembrance parade at the Cenotaph. |

Was
a conscript medical officer doing
my 2 years. Arrived Jan. 55 then sent later
in the year to Amman Shaibah and then Mafraq. Remember when one of my colleagues was getting a flight in a Canberra that swallowed a kite hawk
on take off and aborted/crashed in a ball of flames.
Everybody got out alive. Only other
prang was when an Auster went into the desert over
Cairo way. Pilot rescued by my ambulance. We
found the aircraft first. I got up in a Meteor and a Vampire
T11 and liked it so much that when de-mobbed joined RCAF,
took flying training and became a jet night fighter pilot
with 410 (Cougar) Squadron. in Ottawa 1958. Safaried
to Bir Odeib one time with some of the RAF Regiment- about
100 out of 120 got D+V, the kitchen hands were also the thunder
bucket emptiers!! We also had some Askaris (East
African Pioneer Corp) on base. Some interesting
things happened to them! Over the railroad tracks
was the staging base El Hamra and down the road past the Officers
Lido on the shore of the Great Bitter Lake, was Fanara where
some families were quartered. Got back
there in 1976 -- virtually everything gone -- sand all over
the runways -- buildings flattened -- the thick stone
walls of the chapel still stood however -- The whole place was
a mess! It was rather sad! Yours, Alastair James Berry. |

I served at Fayid from Feb 1949
to May 1952 which included a short spell on detachment in Cyprus. At Fayid I was 2i/c SDS Troop under Sgt. Williams with L/Cpl Jock Wilson as my assistant. Jock is buried at the Fayid Military Cemetery having been killed when we were fired on by civilians while we were travelling to the R.E.M.E. L.A.D near Fanara during the emergency. Our truck overturned as a result of Jock (the driver) being hit , resulting in various injuries to other occcupants, including myself. Jock is listed in this site's Roll of Honour |

I regret losing touch with those I served with. We were very young, from all walks of life, but the comradeship was first class. An even bigger regret, with hindsight, is the degree to which we were misinformed about the political situation and the reasons for our presence. We didn't ask enough questions. Perhaps we were grateful for just having missed the draft to Korea ! On leaving the Zone in December '54 my unit was posted to Habbaniya, Iraq. That ended in disaster too. It seemed that everywhere we went the Flag of Empire was being hauled down - usually to the strains of 'Colonel Bogey' |

I would like to
get in touch with any of my fellow service members.
Two unforgettable circumstances when I served
in the RA, August 1950 - 1952 stand out. One is when I was working underneath a jeep and caught on fire. Gunners saved me by running after me and rolling me in the sand. I then went to Port Said Hospital to recuperate. The other is being left in the desert while on traffic duty. I was there from 5 a.m. to nightfall when my absence was noticed. I received a tin of pilchards for my dinner that night. (My daughter knows better to serve them to me!) Those 2 years were longer than any other I have known I believe this speaks for the advocacy of medals for the MELF (Middle East Land Forces)! |

Whilst you were serving time during National Service it was a bind. Afterwards you look back and think - it wasn't so bad after all. You had a great time, met a good many mates and it made you grow up. You went in as a youngster but came out mature. Perhaps that is what we need now. Will be pleased to hear from any old mates. Started out as a Tech Acc but got the cushy job as pay clerk |

Guard and piquet duties every four days as well as 24 hour shift work in the signals section. Lousy food, most of the time we were confined to camp. Under Active Service, live ammunition, shoot to kill orders when challenged. All transportation had armed escorts. Had a food strike with the cookhouse, did not make any difference despite signals from Parliament from an MP. I was posted to Ish in April 1954, suffered there with the rest until November 1955 then posted to Cyprus, Ayios Nikolaos which was a wonderful posting despite the attentions of EOKA terrorists |

After initial
training at RAF Bridgnorth and trade training
at RAF Weeton both my brother Tony and I were posted to Egypt in March, 1953, directly to "wonderful" El Firdan where we were both HGV drivers in the camp's MT section where we spent the following two and a half years. We flew home for demob in September 1955, from Fayid in a converted Lancaster bomber but had to land at Malta where we stayed over a weekend after two engines failed in mid-flight. We arrived at Lyneham, Wilts, to get our demob papers signed and kit handed in, in the middle of the night. We couldn't have cared less - we were "out" at last! |

I served 26 years in the forces of which 9 were spent in the Middle East and I must admit that it was the most boring posting I ever had. Deserve a medal just for eating the food, though the cooks did their best. Oh those hard tack biscuits and sardines, I miss them, not forgetting the weavils. |

I was stationed at RAF Fayid, which was Transport Command, and I worked in the Electrical Section Stores, and part time projectionist for the RAF cinema on the camp. I believe that there should be some formal recognition, perhaps a Service Medal. |

My worst moment was being caught in a minefield
at TeK and getting away with no more than a sand blasted back
when two of my comrades were killed only a few yards behind me. (See - Smith. A. N. and Smith. F. in the Roll of Honour on this website and in the book White Knees Brown Knees.) |

Before embarkation, we were told: 1. You will be 'on active service'. 2. You will be serving in a 'Theatre of War'. 3. You will receive 'active service pay'. 4. You will always be armed and accompanied outside of camp. 5. Unless ordered, you will NOT shoot first. |

The description of the
Ismailia Riots very true. I was at CC post
(in the grounds of MF Hospital) when the first
Army casualties were brought in and remember Sgt. Murphy as one the first L. Fusiliers to arrive. We also had laid out on some 50 - 60 Egyptian casualties. |
