My name
is Steven Nicholls, living in Australia, and I am making this
post on behalf of William (Bill) Danks, my friend who
just passed away, Tuesday 18th October 2005. Bill served from 1st March 1951 to 21st March 1953. Driver / Batman to Brigade Padre Captain D M Ryle. C.F. I have many photos I am sure Bill would not mind me posting of the Moascar drop in 1951. If you knew Bill please let me know and I will pass on any messages to his family here in Australia and in the UK |

My boat was being refitted in Malta when I embarked with other mixed forces to Suez. I understood this was because I was a SW Diver and there was a perceived threat of sinking a ship in the canal with limpet mines. The object was to bottom search ships going through the canal. In fact I finished up with a small team on the 'Fort Duquesne' with English Officers and a Maltese Crew in the Bitter Lakes, Bottom searching her on a twice daily basis. We were headed by a trained 'Frogman' whose purpose was to disable anything found. |

We were under canvas all the time
at both camps. At Ismailia I did all the usual tourist activities,
at El-Firdan workshops I worked in the machine shop, mostly on the sliding bed planer. At Kasfereet I worked across the road in the 5355 plant compound on the Ashphalt (hotmix) fleet. My leisure time I spent at the 107 MU Sailing club mainly crewing for Jim Wells. Anyone who remembers me, get in touch. |

I was at the transit camp
for two months because of a mix up at my own unit in Aden, I was sent
there instead of straight through to Woolwich. My time there was spent on guard or escort backwards and forwards taking other lucky Squadies to the airfield or the not so lucky ones from the airfield. The one bright spot was when I nearly shot the Orderly Officer early one morning when he crept up on me to see if I was alert. I was on guard on the gate when I heard a scraping noise behind me, I got out two "stannas" before I turned round, I had the safety catch off and the rifle pointed at his chest from about 4 yards, when I told the Guard Commander he said, "You should have shot the silly b*****d, it would have served him right." What a horrible camp that was. |
