It was an experience I will never forget and I made some good friends - I still keep in touch with some but would always like to hear from more; especially those who were in CB Troop, HQRA, MELF 27! |

20 months
enforced misery in the Canal Zone was an un-necessary and
totally useless waste of my time and life at an age when all
experience should have added value to my
future. |

It has been a long standing source of disappointment and a showing of lack of appreciation by the then current government for the service given by personnel in the Canal Zone that no medals were awarded, we were the forgotten army. |

I served in the Canal Zone from 1951 untill 1954 with 16 Indep Para Bde.and was wounded by an Egyptian Soldier armed with a bayonet. When will this or any Government admit to the privations and dangers that we faced and make a retrospective award of The General Service Medal??? |

I served from 1947-1949
on "active service." I do not understand the 1951 separation.
We lost one dead in that period. Why no recognition for us? |

I was stationed with 651 AOP Squadron (Royal Artilary) from late 1953 to 1956 and then transfered to Cyprus with the Squadron. Throughout this period we lived in tented accomodation located in small camp site in isolation on the fringe of the airfield. Facilities for hygiene, meals and toilets were primative to say the least. Guard duties were every three nights, we had to provide our own camp site guard and were included on the guard rota for RAF Ismailia. Our Auster aircraft were used for desert patrols, anti-terrorist activities and in these roles the observer would man a bren gun and fire through the open door way rather like the modern helicopter gun ships. We were often ordered to carry out the observer/rear gunner role. |

Party from HQ 1st. Inf. Div. from Tripoli, Libya to the Canal Zone
on 26 Oct 1951. HQ 1st. Inf. Div. never learned to cope with
National Servicemen. They were poorly treated and served under
what were generally mediocre officers and NCOs . |

I have travelled the World as a
businessman for close on 50 years, but I still look back at my eighteen months
in the Canal Zone as one of the best times of my life. I learnt respect, suffered some hardships (including swimming and playing cricket for the Corps) but more important learnt the true value of companionship. My thanks to Dick Woolley for securing me a small place in history. (See Bryn's article in the 'History and Recollections' section of the website. DW) |
