 At the tender age of 18, I was called up to do my National Service. To get extra pay, I signed on for an extra year. My reward for that, was to be posted to the Canel Zone for a "2 1/2 year tour" of duty, having only a tent for shelter. Indeed, those conditions would not be tolerated today. I suppose, it's expecting rather a lot, for someone "high up", to have had the courtesy to say "thank you" to all of us made to experience the filth and the heat for such a long period of time. A medal would certainly have been earned the hard way, if we had got one!!! Good luck with your pursuit of justice for those of us who had to live and work for up to 3 years in what amounted to a 'hell-hole' and a 'prison', for Queen and country.
One thing that has aways bugged me over the years, is that no one ever said 'thank-you' to me, for what I was put thru during my military service, so a medal
would right that wrong, for me now.
