I am adding my father's name (with
his knowledge) in hopes of finding some of the men he served with. Pictures
would be great too! My father was stationed in the Zone from 1952-1954 at Fayid. Commanding Officer was K.T. Darling. Prior to this, in 1948 he was with the Royal Signals and prior to that in 1944 he was a full corporal with the Royal Signal Fusiliers. If anyone knows him, please contact me and I will get you in touch with him. I have heard many stories from these times; they were the fondest years of his career life. If anyone knows of specific sites I can find info. Regards to the same unit/s, please let me know. Thank you |

worked in 2nd Line. We had Meteors Mk 6? Mk 7 and NF13. I arrived
in Sep '53 and was posted on to Habbanyia when the Station closed in Feb
'54. I well remember many of the incidents described elsewhere. It
is good to know that at long last our service has been recognised though
for too many it is too late. |

We drove from Tripoli to Tobruk, then
flew into Egypt where we were issued with Austin K5's they were our homes
for some time. Our job was running supplies up and down the canal to the
supply depots. I recall moving into the camp at Fanara for the drumhead
funeral service when the King died. We were like tramps after that long on
the road, marching on to that parade with the Grenadier Guards was the most
embarrassing time in my life, a time I shall never forget. I stayed with 7
and 42 coy's RASC till the end of my tour in Dec 1953. |

I am of the opinion that The Suez Canal Zone was the most miserable fly infested God awful place a serviceman could be sent to. Bad food, miserably poor pay and conditions made it the worst posting a soldier or airman could be sent to. The risk of death or injury by terrorist action only played a part of everyday life. I deserve a medal just for spending just over 2 years in that place. |

1952 I did my basic training
at Warrington and Formby. In late December 1952 we sailed to Egypt
on the 'Empire Ken' and landed in January 1953 and transferred to Shandur. Most of my time was spent doing guard duties on our own camp or refrigerating sites, ammunition at Abu Sultan, married quarters on the Canal Road, the C in C headquaters, and twice were lucky to guard the Ladysmith Barracks, the best guard of all. I was also lucky to get two weeks holiday in Cyprus. We came home late in 1954 on the SS 'America' and was transferred to Barnard Castle from were I was de-mobbed. |

I was stationed with 45 Cdo RM at Hodson Camp from
the 7th January 1949 to 1st March 1949, from the 2nd of Feb 1949 to the
28th Sept 1949 my Cdo was sent to the Army Garrison Camp at Moascar, we started
patrolling the Canal road from Port Said at night, the locals were digging
up the Army phone lines, and cutting them, we were told they wanted the
copper covering. We shot four of them dead the first night, they did not
do it again while we were there, so we were sent back to Hodson camp. On
the 1st March 45 Cdo sailed for Aqaba in Jordan, where we stayed for 4 months,
protecting the border from the Israelis, this was an action not made public,
we were there till the 21st of June 1949, then returned to Hodson camp in
Egypt. On the 26th June we sailed on the Motor vessel ‘Georgic’ for Hong
Kong. I joined the Royal Marines at Portsmouth on the 3rd of Feb 1947, and
retired on the 6th Nov 1971 as a Sgt. My last 10 years was at the MOD in
London, on the staff of the Commandant General RM. I do have some photos
of me in Egypt if they would be of interest to you. Keep up the Good work.
Egypt is certainly a forgotten era of our military history. I was the
driver for Lt-Col Norman Tailyour, CO 45 Cdo RM at the Port Said Landing,
and was with him when he was wounded by the mistaken attack by a Royal Navy
Fighter plane who thought we were Egyptians. |

My workplace was the HQ Orderly
Room, Parts I & II orders NCO responsible for both the officers &
other ranks including Postings in and out of the depot and from UK &
to & from overseas units. All documentation of incoming troops would
be interviewed by me and posted to the various departments within the BVD
complex. I remember a lot of faces, but as the years have passed I have
forgotten the names. I am in constant contact
with Norman Brody who I discovered was on this site, who now lives in Denmark, decorated by the Queen of Denmark and am proud to say he is a fellow Scot. Over a thousand RAOC lads were stationed in BVD(E) being the largest RAOC depot in the Middle East. Every new intake would be met by me and later would report to the QM stores for their sheets, blankets etc., and if you were put on guard duty you would report to Norman at the armoury situated at 2 Base Workshops REME adjoining the RAOC lines. I will meet Norman later on this year as I have invited him and his wife Anne to stay with us for a holiday at our apartment in Turkey and it will be over 50 years since we last met. The point I am trying to make that with such a large unit of RAOC lads in BVD(E) only two or three have bothered to place their names on the website. Most of you will be in your seventies now so why don’t you place your name on the website, the contact with a fellow comrade can be enlightening in discussing the memories of Egypt between you. I know that most of us hated the place at certain times but comradeship always took precedent over the fear of situations that occurred from time to time especially with the Muslim Brotherhood in the early fifties through to 1954. We all have memories of these times and confinement to the camp was distasteful, so why don’t you remember your comrades and take the first step to reply to email numbers supplied. Don’t grow old without a friend, a former comrade can fill this and take an active part in your life it is there for you just to click on to an email address. I had an email from a REME Veteran who advised me on a subject that I had written in about and we have become good friends and constantly communicate by email and it is just wonderful to find new comrades as well as old ones. So come on lads, don’t just look - you are only one click away from finding old comrades and possibly new friends that can make life a lot better even through the aches and pains we suffer in our old age. If any BVD(E) veteran remembers me or Norman, click on my email as listed or for Norman, brody*mail.dk. My friend who served at Fanara in the REME was Jim Wilberforce and I am sure he would like to hear from old comrades who served with him and he can be contacted on just one click, james*jwilberforce3.wanadoo.co.uk All genuine friends are just that one click away. I was an ordinary seaman on HMS Ursa, and
I remember the excitement when on watch as a look out and also that this
was probably the last time we witnessed the Fleet in its glory. We were keen, alert and ready to do our duty for Queen and Country. We were disapointed when the British Forces left the Canal Zone because for all intents and purposes the operation had been a success. |
