I was there 1950-1954, I was a anti tank gunner and we escorted anyone using the road. They sent me back to England to train as a gunner, it was a very nerve racking time for all who served there. I joined up at 171/2, I did not wait to be called up, and I feel strongly that we at least deserve the General Service Medal. We seem to be forgotten as if it never was. It was not an easy time for anyone, it was hard on the nerves, we served our country but got no thanks for it everything that came after got recognition for what they did. I was demobed in 1956 but was only home six weeks when I was called back as the trouble flaired up again, so I serverd two spells of duty there. I agree with what you are trying do and will gladly give my support. When I was demobed I ended my sevice a five star guardsman, if anyone still remembers me, I would like to from them, you can e-mail at my sisters e-mail address. |

We took the Royal Marines down the Canal in
1952 and seemed to spend the next year sitting in the lakes
or running up and down the Canal, sometimes running up to Cyprus to pick up stores for the rest of the Flotila. |

I was a regular with the 2nd and 1st Battalion Royal Lincolnshire Regiment, Served at El Ballah, Aqaba, Moascar Garrison, Aqaba, North Camp Ismailia. From 16 June 1948 to 3 March 1952. Tom Radford is doing a fine job, and I am in touch with him from time to time. Yes, we should get a Suez Canal Medal for our service during our time in Egypt. And all the other Regiment and servicemen should get one too |

As a photographer
with Army PR that is one of the few photographers in
the zone. I was loaned to all and sundry by the Colonel commanding
PRS. This entailed working with the SIB on some murders and
accidental killings etc. One job I remember well was taking
pictures of 4RTR who had come to the zone from Korea. The general
opinion of the tankies was that they preferred Korea to the zone.
A quote from Kipling... "It's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an'
'Chuck him out, the brute! But it's 'Saviour of 'is country
when the guns begin to shoot."

I
am looking for anyone who might remember my dad, Flight
Sergeant George A. West who served in the Royal Air Force
until 1957. We were in Suez in 1949-1951[approximately]and sailed
back to England on the Windrush. We were in some sort of a camp
in Tripoli after being evacuated out of Suez in large army trucks.
I remember so many things about Suez even though I was a child
at the time. Anyone out there who might remember Dad, please get
in touch. He died in 1989, and I am very interested in his military
history. I am not sure which base he was stationed at, as we lived
in Suez proper. |

I was at Abu Sultan from December
1953 to June 1955. I was a driver and every day I drove the A.E.C.
Matadore cable waggon, working on bomb demolition. You may remember the loud explosions. Most of the time I was living in tent D7. Names I remember are Ron Smith, Eric Rowley, Jim Rawson, Cpl Dooley and Bob Slack. When I left there I was posted to R.A.F. El Adam. |

I arrived in the Port Said aboard the Troopship H.M.S. Ken. towards the end of Feb.1951. From there I was posted to Moascar. Must say I had quite an enjoyable stay, apart from the flies, mosquitoes and the constant stench, things could have been a lot worse. I represented the R.E.M.E. in cricket. Played a few times in Cairo and Alexandria. I helped build the steps to the high diving board at the swimming pool in Moascar. After making many friends there, (only wish I could track some of them down)I was discharged in August 1952. From there I had to do 2 or 3 years of Z training. What a waste of time and money that was. What an excellent site. Brings back a lot of good memories. Keep it up. Thanks. |
