Roll of Honour

Lest We Forget

Northern Ireland 1969-2002

As one of my old units, 42 Commando, carries out its 16th tour to date, political considerations continue, as they always have, to influence the role of HM forces in the Province. We read and hear of the continuing concessions given to the IRA, many of which I find difficult to fathom. During November last the 'Police Service of Northern Ireland' replaced the Royal Ulster Constabulary. The 12,800 men and women of the RUC have faced ruthless terrorist campaigns from both sides of the religious divide, which would have broken many such forces in other countries. In the past 30 or so years 302 officers of the RUC have been killed and 9,000 injured due to terrorist activities. During the same period, bravery awards to the RUC have included 16 George Medals, 103 Queen's Gallantry Medals and 111 Queen's Commendations for Brave Conduct. Two years ago the RUC officially became known as Royal Ulster Constabulary GC, when the Queen presented the force with the George Cross. During the ceremony Her Majesty said that it was, "exceptional recognition of the outstanding contribution made by the RUC to peace in Northern Ireland." Indeed the Northern Ireland Police Long Service & Good Conduct Medal ribbon has now had dark blue edging added to it, to reflect this honour.

Since 11th September 2001, the IRA has sought to change its image from terrorists to 'freedom fighters', with politicians and the news media conveniently overlooking their record of the past 32 years. It is important that we do not forget that during this period the IRA murdered more that 1,700 people, including 600 innocent people who just happened to be in the way!

The British armed forces have served valiantly in the Province alongside the RUC since 1969. During that time 720 deaths have been sustained with many thousands injured, some very, very seriously, many of who will never recover fully! During this time many acts of gallantry and selflessness have taken place and that is reflected in the number of decorations awarded. The figures below for the period up to1992 reflect the enormity of what has been going on in that troubled land, and, which today is in danger of being forgotten!
